Two other coal mines opened and the population grew to 483 by 1910. Panama, also Indian territory, and part of the Choctaw Nation was established in 1898. Panama was also a coal mining community named Red Town because of all the miners' shacks using red paint for the outside of the shacks. Train tracks were also running through Panama for coal hauling and Panama was still supported by coal mining in the 1930's. Both towns still remain today and have a small school system and are both located in LeFlore county. Distance is 35 40 miles to Ft. Smith Ark. Population ~75,000 -- 80 miles, 1.5 hours to Tulsa, 200 miles, 4 hours to DFW. Several lakes in the area including but not limited to Kerr, Eufaula, Wister and Tenkiller. Land: 120 m/l acres offering cattle production, hay meadow, horse ranch, as well as a building site for your home.
